From Classroom to Clean Water: Interns Experience Bachman Water Treatment Plant

A field trip to the Bachman Water Treatment Plant gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how raw water becomes safe, clean drinking water for the community. During the visit, interns learn about the full treatment process—from initial chemical treatment and sedimentation to filtration and final disinfection—seeing firsthand how impurities are removed and water quality is protected.

Students also have the opportunity to explore key parts of the facility, such as sedimentation basins, filter systems, and laboratory spaces, while hearing directly from water professionals about daily operations and career pathways in the water industry. As one of Dallas’s oldest and still-operating treatment plants, the site offers a unique blend of history and modern technology, showing how infrastructure continues to evolve to meet the needs of a growing city.

Overall, the experience connects classroom science to real-world impact, helping students understand the importance of water treatment, public health, and environmental stewardship.
